The devotion emphasizes trust in God's mercy, forgiveness of sins, and love for one's neighbor. The image depicts Jesus with two rays, one red and one pale, symbolizing the blood and water that flowed from his heart. Veneration has grown exponentially since the canonization of Saint Faustina in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who was a great promoter of this devotion.
