Sebbene l'artigianato del legno Dolfi affondi le sue radici in Val Gardena, l'orologio a cucù ha una storia ben definita e celebre legata in particolare alla regione della Foresta Nera (Schwarzwald) in Germania, un'area culturalmente affine alle tradizioni alpine. La sua invenzione e popolarità risalgono al XVII e XVIII secolo. Originariamente, il cucù era un meccanismo semplice, ma nel tempo si è evoluto in oggetti di alta complessità meccanica e scultorea. Lo stile "Chalet" si è sviluppato nell'Ottocento, cercando di emulare le pittoresche case di montagna, trasformando un semplice orologio in una vera e propria miniatura architettonica ricca di dettagli intagliati, unendo così la precisione orologiera tedesca all'eccellenza dell'intaglio decorativo alpino.
