The Story of Saint Rupert
Saint Rupert of Salzburg was a bishop and Christian missionary of the 7th century, regarded as the founder of the city of Salzburg. Born around 660, Rupert came from a noble Frankish family and became the bishop of Worms. However, his fame is mainly due to his missionary work in the Alpine regions of southern Germany and Austria.
Invited by Duke Theodo of Bavaria, Rupert began to evangelize the pagan peoples of Bavaria and present-day Austria. He established his seat in Juvavum, a ruined Roman city which he renamed Salzburg. Here, he founded the St. Peter's Monastery and the Nonnberg Abbey, making Salzburg an important center for Christianity.
Saint Rupert is often depicted with a salt cellar, symbolizing his association with Salzburg, whose name derives from the word "salz," meaning "salt" in German. Salt, also known as "white gold," was a vital resource and a significant source of wealth for the region.
