A sculpture of great spiritual elegance dedicated to Saint Francis de Sales (1567–1622), Bishop of Geneva, Doctor of the Church, and one of the most beloved saints in Catholic tradition. The figure, dressed in sumptuous deep red episcopal robes with golden borders, reverently holds an open book — a symbol of his tireless teaching and spiritual works, including the famous Introduction to the Devout Life and the Treatise on the Love of God — and a heart of thorns, an iconographic attribute that recalls his ardent love for God and his devotion to the Passion of Christ.
The serene and contemplative face, framed by a thick, carefully sculpted beard, conveys the meekness and gentleness that characterized Francis de Sales' entire life, an apostle of goodness and mercy. The fluid folds of the episcopal vestments, defined by skillful plays of light and shadow, demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship of the carvers of Val Gardena.
Dolfi quality is evident in the choice of materials and meticulous execution. The sculpture is made of fine maple wood for sizes up to 56 cm and sturdy linden wood for larger dimensions. Each piece is hand-painted and finished in Val Gardena.
