Story
Saint Walburga, born in Devonshire around 710, was the daughter of a Saxon chief and sister of Saint Willibald and Winebald. Educated at Wimborne Monastery, she became a nun. In 748, she was sent to Germany with Saint Lioba to assist Saint Boniface in his mission. After two years in Bischofsheim, she became abbess of the double monastery of Heidenheim, founded by her brother Winebald. Upon the latter's death, she was appointed abbess of both monasteries by her brother Willibald, bishop of Eichstadt, remaining superior to both men and women until her death in 779. Initially buried in Heidenheim, her body was later moved next to that of Saint Winebald in Eichstadt, in a small church dedicated to the Holy Cross. Her feast day is February 25th.
