Story
Saint Philip, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, is a central figure in the history of Christianity. Originally from Bethsaida, in Galilee, he was among the first disciples called by Christ. Tradition has it that he died a martyr, crucified upside down, which is why the cross is his most common iconographic attribute, as depicted in the Dolfi statue. His veneration is widespread throughout the Christian world, celebrated on May 3rd together with Saint James the Less. He is the patron saint of several cities and professions, and his intercession is invoked for protection against snake bites and for the healing of diseases.
