The nativity scene, although not associated with a single specific saint, celebrates the Nativity of Jesus Christ, the central event of the Christian faith. Its origin is attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, who in 1223 in Greccio set up the first living representation of the birth of Jesus, with the intention of making the mystery of the Incarnation more tangible and understandable. Since then, the nativity scene has become a universal symbol of Christmas, an artistic and devotional expression that invites contemplation of the mystery of divine love made flesh. Its veneration is manifested in the domestic and public display, in prayer and in reflection on the values of humility, poverty and hope that the Nativity scene embodies.
