More info

The sculpture is of King Melchior offering the gift of gold. It is a representation of the wise King Melchior, considered the oldest wise king. He is shown kneeling, offering the most precious gift of gold to symbolise his wisdom and generosity. The sculpture was carved from a single piece of maple wood and then hand-painted to bring out the details of the figure. The intricate details of the sculpture are a testimony to the artist's skill and mastery. Melchior was one of the three wise men (also known as the Three Kings or Magi) who visited the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. He is believed to have been a Persian or Arab scholar from the Middle East and was one of the first to recognise Jesus as the King of kings. Melchior is said to have brought gold to offer to Jesus, symbolising his royal lineage.
