This scene immortalizes the Marian apparitions that occurred in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal. The three children, cousins to each other, saw the Madonna six times between May and October while tending their sheep. The Virgin entrusted them with three secrets and asked for prayers for world peace.
The visions transformed the lives of the shepherd children. Lucia became a nun, while Francisco and Jacinta died young during the Spanish flu epidemic. They were canonized in 2017, becoming the youngest non-martyr saints of the Catholic Church.
