St. Jude | Dolfi carvings; St. Judas Thaddeus Apostle

October 28th

The saint who is celebrated today together with Simon "the Canaanite" is, although he belongs to the group of 12 apostles, not to be confused with the apostle of the same name who betrayed Jesus, the Iscariot. He is actually Judas, brother of James, called Thaddeus, which means generous. Judas' name is well known in Jewish tradition: in fact, he was one of the sons of Jacob, and the lineage of the Messiah himself would have come from the tribe of Judah. In addition, Judas Maccabees had been a hero of the Jewish revolt against Antiochus IV in the second century BC. According to the account of the Evangelist John in chapter 14, Judas Thaddeus asks Jesus during the Last Supper: ""Lord, how is it that you revealed yourself to us and not to the world?" ""If anyone loves me, he becomes mine Keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him," is Jesus' answer. According to tradition, after the Ascension, Judas Thaddeus also went to bring the proclamation of Christ to the world. According to some, he evangelized Mesopotamia, according to others, Libya. Perhaps he too died as a martyr and was buried in Persia.
