Statue of St. Rita from Cascia with angelic face, crucifix in arms, carved wooden statue; St. Rita was born in Roccaporena (Cascia) around 1380. According to tradition, she was an only child and wanted to dedicate herself to God since her youth, but at the insistence of her parents she was married to a young man of good will but violent character. After the murder of her husband and the death of her two children, she suffered greatly from the hatred of her relatives, whom she was able to reconcile with Christian courage. Widowed and alone, at peace with everyone, she was admitted to the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Cascia. She lived for forty years in humility and charity, in prayer and penance. For the last fifteen years of her life, she bore on her forehead the sign of her intimate union with the crucified Jesus. She died on May 22, 1457. Invoked as a thaumaturge of grace, her body is venerated in the sanctuary of Cascia, destination of constant pilgrimages. Beatified by Urban VIII in 1627, she was beatified by Leo XIII on May 24, 1900. canonized. She is invoked by Christ as the saint of forgiveness and peacemaker.
Roman Martyrology: St. Rita, a nun who, married to a violent man, endured his abuse with patience and finally reconciled him with God. Afterwards, deprived of her husband and children, she entered the monastery of the Order of St. Augustine in Cascia in Umbria, offering everyone a sublime example of patience and repentance.
