More info

St Clare of Assisi, founder of the Poor Clare order, is often depicted with a monstrance because of a miraculous episode in her life. In 1240, Frederick II's Saracen army was about to attack the convent of San Damiano in Assisi. Despite being seriously ill, St Clare had herself brought to the door of the convent with the monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament. Praying intensely, she exposed the monstrance to the enemy soldiers. Miraculously, they were seized with sudden terror and fled, leaving the convent intact. This heroic gesture saved not only her sisters, but also the city of Assisi. St Clare is also remembered for her deep devotion to the Eucharist and her life of extreme poverty, following the example of St Francis. Her unshakeable faith and courage in times of danger made her a symbol of spiritual strength and divine protection. The statue of St Clare that represents this crucial moment is made of maple wood, a valuable material known for its durability and beauty. Every detail of the statue has been meticulously finished and painted by hand by skilled craftsmen, giving the work a vivid and realistic appearance that captures the essence of the saint and her miraculous intervention.
